How Does Solar Hot Water Work?

Solar hot water systems work by using the natural power of the sun! Sunlight is collected by a set of solar panels which then convert the rays into heat energy. As water goes through the system, either from a tank mounted on the roof in an integrated system, or a tank set on the ground in a split system, this energy is transferred into the water.

The water constantly circulates through the heat exchanger and tank, keeping it at a regular temperature, but since the energy is natural it costs you very little. In winter, less sunlight will have an impact on the efficiency of solar units. However, there are simple solutions - gas-boosted or electric-boosted solar.

Boosters backup your hot water unit when there’s just not enough sunlight to power the system. The boosters kick in when you need hot water. With a gas booster, the charges will remain fairly low, meaning you’re not spending much on hot water even in the colder months.

Altogether, you'll have a consistent supply of efficient hot water in summer, winter, autumn or spring.

Solar Hot Water Repairs and Installation

Solar hot water systems have low running costs, but when it comes to repairs, maintenance and installation, you don’t want to be paying too much. Regular maintenance can help you manage the efficiency of your system along with your expenses.

A well-maintained hot water system should last at least a decade and there have even been reports of solar hot water systems running for 20 years. To get the best out of your system, you’ll want to call on the experts.

Solar Hot Water Systems FAQ

A solar hot water system has many benefits but it can be more complicated than you think. Let’s answer some frequently asked questions.

There are many variations to consider when it comes to solar hot water systems. Finding the right combination of these variations is the best way to find the right system for you. Thermosiphon systems have the collectors panels and water storage tank fixed to the roof. Pumped (or split) systems have the collector panels on the roof which heat the water and pump it down to a storage tank on the ground.

Hot water storage tanks typically range from 125L to 400L. An average Australian four-person household will require two collector panels and a 300-360L storage tank to ensure adequate hot water. That is about 75L per person. Here are a few things to consider:
  • How many people live in your home
  • Approximately how much water does your home use
  • What time do you use your hot water
  • Do you all use hot water at the same time of day
  • Is there a high demand for overlapping hot water use
Upside Down plumbers can give advice on the best sized solar hot water system for your home.

It is always recommended that a solar hot water system be installed with a booster unit for days when the sun isn’t out. A booster is a back-up water heating device that is powered by either gas or electricity when the heat from the sun is not sufficient to heat the water on its own.

A well-maintained solar hot water system can last more than 10 years and some will even continue to perform after more than 20 years.  To get the most out of your solar system it is important you have it regularly serviced. Not only will this extend the life of your solar water heater, but it will also ensure it runs efficiently, saving you money in the long run.
