Smoke alarms are required by law in all Australian homes as the first line of defence to alert you, your neighbours, or even the fire department (or local emergency services) in the event of a house fire.

Regulations around smoke alarm installation are mostly uniform across Australia, however the guidelines may vary slightly by state. At a minimum, smoke alarm legislation in every state requires every property to have at least one smoke alarm. Some states will require one alarm per floor, or even one alarm for every individual room of a house.

If you're unsure about your obligations, don't worry because we've got you covered. Every electrician at Upside Down is required to maintain an up to date working knowledge of the smoke alarm regulations and is qualified to perform a thorough check to ensure your house is appropriately fit out to comply with local building regulations.

Smoke Detector Replacement

Smoke alarm laws around the country require homes to have a minimum of one or more working smoke alarms installed.

It's also required that smoke alarms must be up to date and in working order, with a wired connection to the mains power.

That's right, it's important to consider not only the placement of the smoke alarm itself but also the power source, whether it's part of an interconnected system, and how old the system is.

If taken care of, smoke alarms can last for 10 years after which time they will need to be replaced. However, as new smoke alarm legislation has been updated to improve the safety of homes, you may find that your lone, old, battery-powered smoke alarm just doesn't cut it anymore.

Whether your smoke alarms aren't working as well as they should, or you simply want your old system replaced with a new smoke alarms peace of mind, then call Upside Down today.

We can replace your ionisation smoke alarms with interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms, or have your old battery-operated detectors replaced with a wired network of interconnected alarms to protect you and loved ones in a worst-case scenario.

FAQ – Smoke Alarm Questions Answered

Do you have any questions about smoke alarms? We can answer all your questions here.

Yes. The Building Code of Australia requires every home and business to have a smoke alarm. Every house built since 1997 must have one hardwired to the mains power supply. It is also required to be replaced every 10 years. Each state and territory may have slightly different rules. However, the recommendation also extends to a central location for smoke detectors in a hallway near bedrooms, and on every floor of a multi-storey house. This means you need at least one per house but it could be three or more.

Smoke detectors come in two different types – ionisation and photoelectric. They work in different ways. Ionisation contains a very small amount of radioactive material. Ionised air flows in a current between two electronically charged plates, where smoke will disrupt the airflow, activating the alarm. Photoelectric uses light aimed into a sensing chamber and angled away from the sensor. As smoke enters, the light reflects onto the sensor, triggering the alarm.

Smoke detectors last up to 10 years. After a decade they must be replaced to comply with industry standards. If you’re unsure of the age of yours, just check the unit for a date of manufacture or expiry date. You can also contact the manufacturer or supplier for details, providing the batch or serial number that’s on the unit.

No, it’s unlikely that vape will trigger an alarm as the vapour particles are not thick like smoke is. With a rise in e-cigarettes and vape pens there has been an increased concern in setting off smoke detectors. Although it’s not likely to trigger an alarm, we’d recommend not to vape near one, just in case.
