FAQ − We Answer You Electrical Meter Questions

Have you got any questions about electrical meters? We answer the most commonly asked questions below.

Knowing the location of your electrical meter is crucial, especially during emergencies when you need to shut off your power to prevent further damage. In most cases, you’ll find your meter on one of the exterior walls of your home, often near where the power enters the property. The easiest way to locate it is to follow the path of the power line that connects to your home. If you live in an apartment or multi-dwelling unit, the meters are typically grouped together. It’s important to ensure you’re identifying the correct meter for your specific unit, as accidentally turning off your neighbour's electricity is something you’ll want to avoid.

There are several reasons you might need to replace your electrical meter − whether you’re renovating, installing solar panels, or the meter has become outdated. Since December 1, 2017, energy retailers are responsible for installing, replacing, and reading smart meters. When a meter needs to be replaced, it must now be upgraded to a smart meter, which can be remotely read by the energy company for more accurate billing.

While you may be tempted to paint your meter box to improve your home’s exterior, there are a few things to consider. First, check with your local building department to see if there are regulations regarding painting the box or placing any covering around it. If painting is allowed, clean the box first, avoiding any flammable cleaners, and be sure to mask off any electrical components to prevent paint from interfering with their function.

Removing or relocating your electrical meter is not a DIY task. You’ll need to request approval from your energy retailer, and once granted, a licensed electrician can handle the job. Incorrect handling can lead to dangerous electrical faults, including shocks or even fires. At Upside Down, our electricians are fully qualified to safely move or remove your electrical meter, ensuring it meets all regulations.
